More about the fellowship
Here, the current incumbent, Rachael Lawrence, tells us about the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Fellowship. This includes, the relevant detail on the day to day exposure and responsibilities of the fellow, including the number of theatre and clinic sessions per week, the expected/planned involvement in the on-call/OOH cover, and the expected number of cases over the fellowship and of what type.
Senior Clinical Fellows (SCFs) are exposed to a vast amount of clinical work on both an elective and emergency basis across an array of clinical settings including the outpatient clinic, on the inpatient wards, and via ward and emergency department referrals. A typical week includes 4 sessions in theatre (2 days) and 3 outpatient clinic sessions, including exposure to specialty clinics and associated multidisciplinary team meetings. SCFs are also allocated a weekly Continuing Professional Development (CPD) session, enabling the opportunity to contribute to the vibrant research programme within the department. Teaching and educational skills can be developed through guidance and clinical support of under- and post-graduate trainees including rotating Specialty Trainees and medical students.
The expected number of combined elective and emergency theatre cases is approximately 300-600 over 12 months, consisting of a wide range of paediatric ENT surgical procedures, including airway endoscopy, airway reconstruction, major head and neck surgery, rhinology, otology and cochlear implantation.
On-call commitment consists of a 1:8 weekday and 1:8 weekend out of hours cover.Rachael Lawrence
