A welcome to BAPO Juniors

Emma Gosnell

BAPO Trainee Rep

Hi, I’m Emma and I’m the BAPO trainee rep for 2022 and 2023.

I’m really excited to be given the opportunity to help set up BAPOJ. I’ve just completed ST7 and am based in Manchester within the North West Deanery, having been fortunate to spend a large part of my training at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital where my love for Paediatric ENT grew.

I know how lucky I am to have had this opportunity and that not everyone gets this chance so I am really passionate about opening as many doors as possible for trainees to learn, touch and feel what life is like working in ENT with Children…because I think its great!

As one of the few trainee members of BAPO at my time of election, my objective is to grow our trainee membership base nationally by developing a really useful learning and networking community.

I look forward to meeting you all over the next 2 years!
Emma

The Susanna Leighton Fellowship

In memory of the late Mrs Susanna Leighton, Consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital, BAPO supports a training grade surgeon to attend the European Society of Paediatric Otolaryngology with a grant of up to £750. The fellowship is awarded annually at the BAPO scientific meeting to the trainee who delivers the best oral presentation during the Leighton Fellowship session. You can contact us to find out more.

The Amged El-Hawrani Memorial Prize

The tragic death of Consultant ENT Surgeon Amged El-Hawrani, Queen’s Hospital, Burton,  from Covid-19 Coronavirus  in March 2020 was a devastating blow to his family, colleagues and the wider ENT community. Alongside paediatric ENT, Amged had a special interest in H&N surgery, thyroid surgery and skin cancer. He was full of energy, known for his very high workload, cared deeply about his patients and had time for everyone. He was particularly known for his good reputation as a clinical teacher and trainer. This memorial prize of £750 will be awarded to a trainee following the oral presentations at the annual BAPO meeting.

BAPOJ Research Grant

This latest addition to BAPO’s prizes is £1500 towards a paediatric otorhinolaryngology based research project. Abstract submissions will be open prior to the September Annual Meeting for BAPOJ members. Those successfully shortlisted will be invited to present their proposal at the September Annual meeting in front of a panel of judges and be prepared to “pitch perfect” for a chance of winning the prize.

Submission deadlines and application forms will be advertised on the website.

BAPOJ Travelling Fellowship Prize

We are delighted to announce the BAPOJ fellowship fund of up to £1000 to contribute towards a paediatric otolaryngological fellowship which is open to BAPOJ members. Interested members will be invited to submit a 500 word response to a paediatric otolaryngology related topic, question or controversy. The prize is to be collected at the annual meeting in September. The winner will be asked to share their fellowship experience with us at a future meeting.

Submission deadlines and application forms will be advertised on the website.

The Key Details:

This Paediatric Clinical Fellowship is a fully-funded one year Clinical Fellowship based at Starship Children’s Hospital, Auckland. Given its wide catchment area there is extensive exposure to a wide variety of pathologies, sometimes at an advanced stage.

The candidate would experience a busy clinical workload with experience in all aspects of elective and emergency Paediatric Otolaryngology. Whilst airway focussed, the position involves significant exposure to all aspects of paediatric otolaryngology. This includes airway disease, laryngology, otology, rhinology and head and neck surgery. Experience of airway surgery is likely to include both endoscopic and open procedures including laryngotracheal reconstruction, cricotracheal resection and slide tracheoplasty.

The Fellowship is designed to prepare the candidate for a tertiary level Paediatric ORL consultant position at the end of the 12 month period. To gain the most from this position, the candidate should already have reasonable exposure to and experience of paediatric ORL during their higher surgical training.

There is a 1:3 on-call responsibility. This involves supervising a registrar with consultant cover. There is also a funded continuing medical education budget of $16,000. This can be used, for example, to attend National and International conferences.
